Artist's Comments

Meet Suzie.. a beautiful 18 year old prostitute from Wan Chai, Hong Kong. She likes to pretend sometimes that she's not a prostitute, but a beautiful girl named Mei Ling. Here we find her crying at the doorway as her personality again splits so she can cope with reality. "My name.. Mei Ling Wong, my father very rich man.. I not dirty street girl... I NOT DIRTY STREET GIRL!"

This drawing was based on a character from the movie 'The World of Suzie Wong' played by Nancy Kwan. I saw this and felt quite inspired to do this. I can imagine there's quite a few girls in HK now stuck in the same situation.

This was done using a .5mm mechanical pencil and graphites on some tan vellum. Total time was about 6 hours.

I love the narrative feel here. That face is so sad, I really feel the sorrow. The way she's leaning into the wall, she just looks broken down.

Amazing work.

She seems almost elegant, but it conveys such despair. It's really very beautiful.

thank you so much.. you are so nice to say :)

Just as gorgeous as always--you caught the emotions perfectly. One of my favorite things is how you did the hair; I wish my hair had that kind of a shine to it, realistic but still faintly stylized in some way, as if it were made out of a precious metal instead of keratin.

The tinted paper adds so much character. Good choice.
The drawing is techically good and emotionally strong.

I love this picture, it conveys the emotion of the subject so strongly that it demands to be a favorite.
